Here we go once again!
Seems like I just can't resist expressing myself on some sort of "media," even when past attempts have proven many times that I’ve failed. :S Today marks my last day on Twitter/X and the second rebirth of my personal blog, so: The king is dead, long live the king!

Social media: the decline of Twitter/X and the rise of Uncle Musk
My Twitter/X account dates back to 2010 not too early, not too late to witness history unfolding through tweets. I’ve seen the platform evolve and devolve, from its golden days to its downfall. I remember creating my account because I wanted a place to gather data to fuel my interests but also a single hub where I could read anything I wanted: from the latest news to trending topics, gaming, technology, music, videos, and beyond.

Twitter was a great place to be. The community was massive, interactions catered to every taste, yet you could always carve out a comfortable corner to have meaningful discussions polite or not. It was the "geek" / "nerdy" hub less trendy than Facebook but far richer in content. I discovered many of the key services, games, and frameworks I still use today through Twitter, either by following people or being part of lists.

I don't know exactly what went wrong in the Musk era. I naïvely assumed nothing would change after all, the content was still created by the same people who had always been there. Even if, "in theory," Musk's stricter and more authoritarian policies were being pushed, I believed that as long as I followed legitimate sources, my topics of interest wouldn't be buried. What a fool I was.

It felt like flipping a switch: one day, Twitter was still "Twitter"; the next, it was a dystopian wasteland flooded with garbage content, fake news, and relentless bot spam about things I neither cared for nor wanted to see. My feed became a chaotic mess filled with violent incidents (mainly US-related), war conflicts (Russia/Ukraine, then Israel/Palestine), and other topics I had never sought out. Sure, I followed reputable news outlets and journalists to stay informed, but this was different my usual interests had been completely erased.

I tried to "hack" the algorithm blocking accounts that posted this repetitive content but no matter what I did, gaming, tech, and my usual feed never returned. At that point, I realized I had no interest in staying on a platform that was clearly manipulating or "steering" my daily feed. The final straw was when many of the accounts I followed started migrating elsewhere (it was Mastodon’s time to shine), and my Twitter timeline became an empty shell of what it once was.

I gave them all a shot: Mastodon, Threads, Bluesky. But none could capture the magic of old-school Twitter. I left out Instagram and Reddit because, to me, they feel like polar opposites one is overly polished, drowning in influencer marketing, while the other is an uncontrolled free-for-all where every conversation turns into a debate or a joke, no matter the topic.

Maybe I’m just getting too old for this shit. Maybe it’s time to channel my thoughts into writing to "spill it out," clear my mind, and move forward.
So, for now, the only thing left to say is: The king is dead, long live the king!
Cheers.
